Home Security Safety Checklist - Keep Your Home Safe and Secure

1. Make sure all your exterior doors are fitted with cylinder locks and deadbolts and always remember to keep your home safes by locking them when you are out. The bolts should be fitted using screws and have a minimum one inch throw. The plate that the bolt enters should be fixed with four screws. Hinges should not be accessible from the outside.

2. Solid exterior doors should be fitted with a wide angled viewer.

3. Windows in doors should be a minimum of 40 inches from any locks.

4. Install devices to all your sliding doors and windows that will prevent anyone lifting them out of their track from the outside.

5. Fit security locks to all windows and keep them locked as much as possible.

6. Make sure you can get out of your home safely in the event of fire by keeping keys handy and make sure everyone in the home knows where they are. If you can't find a key when you need it, someone may get trapped inside.

7. Locks to doors are best fitted with thumb turn devices on the inside for easy escape in the event of fire. Make sure everyone in the home can reach the thumb turns.

8. Exterior doors and door frames should be strong enough to stand up to excessive force that might be used by intruders. To keep your home safe from intruders it's best to use only solid wood doors and frames.

9. Make sure all your tools, ladders and outdoor equipment is safely stored away in a locked garage, shed or outbuilding. Ladders should always be stored away - do not help burglars by leaving them out.

10. Check all other entrances to your home are safe and secure including skylights, vents, pet doors and any crawl ways.

11. Your property should be protected with a security alarm which needs be regularly serviced by a reputable home security company. A dog is an excellent intruder alarm and deterrent.

12. Keep a list of all your valuable items in a safe place. This will enable you to provide accurate information to the police and insurance company in the event of a burglary. Marking valuable items in some way may help you recover them if they are stolen.

13. Bushes and shrubs should be kept trimmed particularly under windows. Try to eliminate hiding places for burglars and keep your landscaping low and visibility high.

14. Keep your home well lit inside and outside to deter potential intruders. Fit movement detector lighting to exterior walls.

15. Keep cash, important papers or valuables in a good quality home security safe.
